Euro Shopper Energy Drink Sugar Free

April 6th, 2013

I maybe putting this second in my list of nicest Red Bull Clones. It was very similar to Red Bull Sugar Free, but with a little bit more bitterness (a tiny eeny weeny amount more). This will give Aldi’s Red Thunder a run for its money and the deciding factors will now have to be price, availability and convenience. It’s a lot nicer than the non-sugar-free version of Euro Shopper’s Energy Drink and whether that is down to a ‘new improved’ flavour exercise that has happened since I tried the original I’m not sure – I may have to re-evaluate.

Blue Bolt Cherry and Blackcurrant

March 30th, 2013

An interesting combination – I think that Sainsbury”s have just taken a summer fruits cordial, added some carbonated water, and dropped a couple of Pro Plus tablets in to the concoction. I’m not sure this is a necessary addition to the own-brand energy drink market but all the supermarkets seem to be trying to out-do each other at the moment.

Rockstar Super Sours Bubbleburst

March 23rd, 2013

Hmm… I was concerned that it would taste like those cheap tubs of bright blue ‘drink’ you get from corner shops everywhere, and I wasn’t far wrong. It tastes of bubblegum, and is not very sour either which was disappointing. Having said that, I did enjoy it though! Given the name ‘super sour’, both this and the green apple flavour are far too tame in my opinion. Rockstar should have gone all out and made them proper sour so as your lips and gums peel back over your teeth. Then I’d have been really impressed.

Red Bull – The Silver Edition (2013) Citrus

March 9th, 2013

Do you remember the good old days when alcopops such as Hooch and Metz ruled the bars? Well, another member of that bygone family was the Smirnoff Mule, and the Silver Edition of Red Bull tastes pretty much as a remember that tasting, only with less vodka of course. The lime flavour is pretty strong and sour but works. Out of the three special editions, I’d put this one as my second favourite. It’s refreshing, but only just – any stronger and it’d be far too sickly.

Red Bull – The Blue Edition (2013) Blueberry

March 2nd, 2013

Red Bull are full of surprises. I thought this would be my favourite of the three new editions. As it happens it isn’t – it’s good, don’t get me wrong on that, but it was a tad too sharp to be my favourite. So far, the Red edition is holding first place. The drink is tart and fruity, but very sweet. Slightly too sickly if I’m being honest but it still gives you the standard Red Bull kick. It tastes premium and is a good fit in the Red Bull range – I can’t say it’s all that original because I’ve tried blueberry energy drinks from the US before and it’s pretty similar to those.

Red Bull – The Red Edition 2013 (Cranberry)

February 23rd, 2013

The Red Edition of Red Bull has been flavoured with Cranberry. Now, I don’t normally enjoy cranberry flavoured drinks, finding them bitter and leaving a bad aftertaste. Red Bull have managed to overcome that completely. What you experience is a flavour like no other energy drink. It has no typical energy drink background flavour, but instead has a very sweet and fruity cranberry taste with absolutely no bitterness at all. Of the three new editions, this was the first I tried thinking I’d be getting the worst one out of the way to start with. I was very surprised and really enjoyed it – one of my favourite energy drinks now.

Euro Shopper Energy Drink Berries

February 16th, 2013

This was pretty good. Euro Shopper have branched out predictably from their standard Energy Drink offerings to include two new fruity flavours. This one tastes of berries and is generically fruity yet very nice. For 39p, you can’t really go wrong and as with the other Euro Shopper drinks it’s worth a go.

Tesco Energy Drink Sugar Free

February 9th, 2013

Just like the full-fat version, the sugar free Tesco own-brand drink is watery and lacking in flavour. It’s cheap, but in this price range you’d be better going for for the Aldi, Lidl, or Euro-shopper own-brands.

Tesco Energy Drink

February 9th, 2013

A rejuvenated effort by Tesco to enter the own-brand energy drink market. Their previous own-brand, Kick / Kx, was quite a bitter tasting drink. This time, they’ve lost the bitterness, but ended up with something quite bland and watery. It’s perfectly drinkable and pleasant, but is lacking in flavour.
