Emerge Active8 Water: Yuzu
November 18th, 2017I’ve never heard of Yuzu, let alone seen or tasted one. I reckon if I can find some I’d like them! This drink is reeeally nice! I was expecting it to be quite watery, like a really dilute squash, but I was wrong. It’s balanced just right, slightly sparking and very refreshing. It tastes like a less-tart lemon, with a light citrus flavour. definitely not tropical tasting, but smooth and lemony. This drink is aimed at sportspersons, with added magnesium for alledged protein synthesis… I suggest you do your own research on that :).

Moose Juice: Green Apple
November 11th, 2017Again in the Moose Juice range, I’m really not seeing the point. They’re aimed at gym goers with their added BCAAs and low calorie content, but being in a large can they’re not easily sippable – you have to drink the whole thing in one sitting unless you go to the hassle of decanting to a bottle. They’re also expensive compare to rival energy drinks, and contain ingredients (the BCAAs I mentioned) that you’re likely to have put in your post gym protein shake anyway. It tastes good and has a nice caffeine hit, but overall it’s difficult to see where it fits in a routine.

Moose Juice: Berry
October 28th, 2017I generally like the berry energy drinks – each one tends to taste very different depending on which berry they’ve chosen to base it around. In this instance I was quite surprised – I think it’s like a sherbet cherry flavour. It’s really sweet and tangy, and very nice especially on the scorching hot day I tried it on. It has a slightly higher caffeine content than most drinks, and also includes the body-builder’s favourite BCAAs if you like that sort of thing.

Moose Juice: Blue Raspberry
October 21st, 2017Out of the 4 flavours of Muscle Moose’s Moose Juice currently available at time of writing, this is my favourite. Blue raspberry always reminds me of my walks to/from school as a child because of the range of 1990s confectionary available in that flavour: jellies, soft drinks, ice pops… good memories! This drink is low in calories and designed for the gym goer – it includes BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids) which are a common supplement taken by body builders to supposedly aid the absorbtion of protein into the body post-workout. I only use the term supposedly because I don’t wish to make any claims for or against the supplement, I shall leave you to do your own research on that! I suppose as it’s in there, it does mean that if you have a can of this after your workout, then your post-workout protein shakes wouldn’t need the BCAAs either, but combining energy drinks with protein shakes is a bit unsettling on the stomach in my opinion so I couldn’t recommend it. If we forget the gym setting for a moment, it’s a nice standalone drink, but considerably more expensive than alternatives due to its branding.

Red Bull – The Purple Edition (2017) Acai Berry Sugar Free
August 19th, 2017It’s sugar free! That’s the best bit to start with. It’s flavoured with Acai Berry, and that’s a difficult flavour to pin down in terms of a description but I’ll try. To me it tasted like mixed berries (raspberries, blackcurrants) with a slight bitterness and tang added in similar to what you’d get from a tropical drink. Because this was an American drink, it was in a larger can than we’d expect in the UK, but I liked this drink overall and I hope that Red Bull start bringing their new editions over here.

5-hour Energy Blue Raspberry
August 5th, 2017Shots are normally bitter and hang around on your tastebuds nastily for a while, but this one was surprisingly better than usual. It is sweet (although you can detect the harsh undertones of a traditional energy shot) and fruity, and woke me up pretty quickly. That’ll be the caffeine at work there, because this shot is sugar-free.

Monster Ultra Black

Spike Shooter
May 27th, 2017This drink is dangerous! Pay careful attention to the caffeine content labelled on the can and the associated warning text. A regular can of Red Bull contains 32mg of caffeine per 100ml of drink, Spike contains more than three times that amount making this a very potent cocktail. Ok, so it genuinely has zero calories, but there is a warning on the can advising you to drink just half a can in order to assess your tolerance to it. It *will* wake you up, and in my case give you a headache which is unusual for me! I followed the instructions, consuming half a can first, waiting about 8 hours before having the rest and I’d suggest anyone else trying this drink also be cautious. It does taste pretty good though – it’s a smooth mixed berry flavour from what I can tell and it’s balanced about right.

Beaver Buzz: Canadian Punch Sugar Free
May 20th, 2017I have to admit, this drink was purchased mainly for the interesting name… <insert innuendo here>. It’s quite sickly and not refreshing, the fruit punch flavour being very strong.
