Nalu

June 30th, 2012

Another foreign import, this time thanks to a friend who had visited Belgium. This ‘Fruity Energizer’ claims to have a ‘Reinforced Formula’ and gets its caffeine hit from green coffee beans. Although claiming to be low calorie, I’d really classify it as ‘a bit lower in calories’ because it still packs in almost 20 calories per 100ml.

Crunk Grape-Acai

June 23rd, 2012

I was taken straight back to my childhood when I took a sip of this one. Many years back, on the way to school, we used to buy zillions of packets of some sour ball sweets (can’t remember the name). We’d have daily competitions of who could fit the most in their mouth before gagging… oh the memories. Anyway, this drink reminds me of the sour grape flavoured sweets we had. Might not be the nicest tasting but the memories filled in the gaps! If you can find a can, try it and maybe you’ll take a trip down memory lane too.

KX Tropical

June 9th, 2012

I’ll spare you the usual rant about tropical drinks this time. It’s not too bad to be honest but then again it is a predictable addition to the KX range. Sweet, tart, and what you’d expect… It’s a ‘tropical’ clone.

Mountain Dew White Out

June 2nd, 2012

Yummy! Another imported can purchased at Americandy. This drink tastes like a very smooth lemonade. There’s no sharpness to it and the balance of carbonation, citrus flavouring, sweetness and sickliness is just right. Not the best Mountain Dew but certainly near the top. It’s also the first Mountain Dew which doesn’t seem to contain a radioactive colouring. This drink is just a cloudy  white colour (as the name suggests) which makes it similar in appearance to a traditional lemonade.

Guarana Antarctica

May 26th, 2012

“O Original Do Brasil” apparently… and another apparently, it’s the second most popular soft drink in Brazil after Coca-Cola. Finally, stocked by Tesco, it is available in the UK. If you’re expecting a massive energy hit from a guarana extract beverage then you’ll be disappointed. The caffeine estimate is a generous 1mg/100ml – which I suspect is over estimated. Flavour-wise, it’s unique. There’s something slightly fruity about the taste, a bit appley with a hint of pear. Of course, those fruits aren’t actually in the drink, I’m just trying to describe the flavour of guarana itself – try it for yourself because it’s very different to any other soft drink I’ve tried..

Monster Rehab Rojo Tea

May 12th, 2012

After the Monster highlight that was the Lemonade + Tea version of Rehab, I expected this one to be great. Sadly, it tasted like someone had dipped an old teabag in some cranberry squash. Bleurgh. It was sweet, and could have been refreshing, but the stale taste of tea with every mouthful was sickening. Having said that, full marks for originality because no-one else has been stupid enough to make this daft combination.

Red Thunder Diet

May 7th, 2012

This is my favourite Red Bull Cone of all time. It has the perfect mix of  smoothness, sweetness and value for money which makes it stand out from the crowd by miles. If you want to stock up on energy drinks then buy six-packs of these in Aldi. Let’s hope they don’t try to ‘improve’ the taste in future versions.

Crunk Mango-Peach

April 28th, 2012

This drink is very strong in flavour and caffeine. It’s not to my taste as I found it far too fruity. It’s a tropical drink really but without the pineapple twist that you usually get. Not my favourite Crunk really but I had to try it of course! It contains the usual proprietary Crunk mix of random aphrodisiac ingredients which I’m sure they’ve invented the names of (legal disclaimer: they haven’t, the names are just strange).

Mountain Dew Throwback

April 21st, 2012

Mountain Dew how it used to be apparently. The can says it is “made with real sugar”, I guess that is as opposed to the corn syrup that the Americans usually use in their soft drinks. The design of the can is completely different to the design and branding off all the other Mountain Dew products, the design of which is based loosely on the original Mountain Dew logo from the 1970s. The actual flavour of the drink is a lot smoother and lighter than regular Mountain Dew, and if you pour it from the can you’ll also notice it isn’t bright yellow either – just a paler yellow instead. I’d have to say I enjoyed it just as much as regular Mountain Dew and I’d hazard a guess that due to the fewer ingredients used it’ll be *slighter* better for you.
