Rip It – Stinger Mo

February 4th, 2012

This is very interesting…. it’s basically what you’d expect from a normal energy drink. But… it’s not a Red Bull clone, it’s a Monster Energy clone! I don’t even have a category for Monster Energy clones because as far as I’m aware this is the first, so I’ll just have to mark it down on originality. Or is it more original because it has copied someone other than Red Bull? That aside it’s a great tasting drink and has all the sweetness and flavour of Monster Energy so if you like that you won’t be disappointed. What’s with the name though? Maybe I’m just too old now and don’t get it, but it would be nice to have a clue as to what the flavour of the drink is going to be written somewhere on the can, and the Stinger Mo name doesn’t give me any clues either.

Blue Bear Light

January 28th, 2012

I’m still not sure what it is about sugar-free energy drinks that makes them taste (usually) considerably better than their lard enducing counterparts, but Blue Bear Light follows the same trend. Spar’s own-brand diet energy drink is a nice little Red Bull clone but sadly a tad overpriced in my opinion.

Red Z

January 21st, 2012

A nice Red Bull Clone which doesn’t suffer from any nasty aftertaste, bitterness or sour notes. I’d be interested in trying a sugar-free version of this one which could potentially improve the flavour. Cheaper than Red Bull, but not cheap enough to make it a preferable choice sadly.

Lucozade Alert Plus Shot

January 7th, 2012

A very sour lemon tasting  shot, but it does wake you up. It’s also sugar free as standard which is unusual given that Lucozade products are normally quite high in sugar and calories. The sugar isn’t missed though because you get the energy hit quickly and it lasts for a few hours making this quite an effective shot.

React

December 31st, 2011

Another big-time contender emerges, sponsoring Reel Big Fish from off-of scateboarding game sound tracks as they tour the US. It is a Red Bull clone, butgets the balance just right and for only 99p for a 500ml can it’s reasonably priced too. The can looks good (even if the logo is trying to be a little ‘Relentless’) and the drink tastes good. Sadly the main web site at time of writing doesn’t appear to house anything other than a logo of brand, so you may want to check out the Facebook page instead: http://www.facebook.com/reactenergy. This brand has potential – I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a sugar free version and I’m hoping they go the way of Crunk and Rip It and start to produce other flavours.

Hell

December 24th, 2011

Nice, but certainly not original. It’s just another clone as I’d expected. Tasted smooth and provided the required energy boost but sadly other than the name and the interesting can design, it just doesn’t stand out. I’ve noticed however that Hell are providing a number of pre-mixed alcoholic beverages including vodka and whisky varieties. I’m still debating in my own mind as to whether these can count as energy drinks to review on this site, perhaps a new category? Let me know what you think anyway…

Crunk Citrus

December 17th, 2011

Now, I’m not sure who copied who, but as far as I’m concerned the flavour of this drink is identical to Rockstar Recovery but slightly carbonated. It tastes amazing to me! It’s a little trickier to get hold of in the UK because it has been imported by the reseller, but if you do come across a can then go grab it.

Rockstar Xdurance

December 10th, 2011

I really do like Rockstar Energy Drinks! They’re just so different each time. Whereas with Monster, you get the Monster taste sneaking through in whichever flavour you purchase, with Rockstar they’ve managed to make each one individual. Xdurance very lightly carbonated but not flat, and tastes of blueberries. It’s a very different flavour and I was quite excited to have found it in a tiny newsagents near where I live. It’s jam packed full of caffeine and calories and tastes amazing with added pomegranate and acai for fun. I did at first think it might have been the world’s first counterfit energy drink until I looked it up on Rockstar’s web site, because of a typo on the can (see the image below). “Rockstar Xdurance is Dfsigned to give you…” yes, it’s dfsigned not designed… oh well.

Scheckter’s Organic Energy

December 7th, 2011

There seems to be a trend at the moment for pomegranate flavoured drinks, at least I think that is the flavour as it’s the prominent ingredient in the drink in question. Consequently I’m thinking of creating a new review tag of Pussy Clone… the name may need working on to be honest. Scheckter’s drink tastes like the Pussy drink (again, careful wording) and other European drinks I’ve tasted in the past whose names I can’t remember. It’s nice as far as this category go, but not really to my taste. It’s the first organic drink reviewed on this site and has both Fairtrade and Organic Soil Association approvals – these may be the cause for the high cost per can. Drink a can of this and it’ll give you the energy to hug trees all day.
