Mmm strawberries. I have to be honest and say that I was expecting a much stronger strawberry taste, but that would probably lessen the appeal to the masses making it a bit too sickly. Rip It Red Zone has struck a nice balance, it’s got the nice strawberry flavour I like but it isn’t too overpowering and sickly. The background flavour is the same as the Rip It Shot of the same variety only without the bitterness you get with energy shots. Caffeine-wise it is one of the lowest in the range at 35.4mg/100ml but it is still much higher than most UK energy drinks! The drink is obviously a bright pink colour (red food colouring?) to associate it with strawberries even further.

Does anyone else remember those lemon and orange jelly candy slices you used to get around Christmas time? They were quite thin, about an inch wide and coated in sugar? Well, that’s what this shot tastes like. It’s a pretty decent tasting drink – not sour or bitter, but sweet and citrusy (if that’s a word).

Cheap and naff, to be honest. A non-descript blackcurrant flavour, a little sharp for my liking. It’s an obvious attempt to jump on the flavoured energy drink market. Step 1) choose between tropical, orange, berry, citrus. Step 2) Sell new flavour. It’s not original and I hope these brands start to innovate a bit more in future.
Sharp and tangy, perhaps I’m warming to the idea of tropical energy drinks after the unstoppable onslaught of them in recent months. I’d still prefer something less tropical, but it was okay I suppose. Cheap and cheerful but nothing special
It’s a very large can of generically budget energy drink. It’s a sweet mix, but slightly watery even though it keeps a decent 31.5mg/100ml of caffeine in tow. Mega hit of energy, and a rather nice flavour. I’d buy it again. One thing you should note is that it appears to have changed its name. The can I purchased was named XS Energy, but the web site declares a name change to XC Energy, presumably because of a trademark issue or other such problem.

Tart and sickly. I suppose it’s okay for a budget supermarket own-brand, but it brings nothing original to the energy drinks market and isn’t particularly to my taste either.

I purchased this from a health store, so it must be good for you, right? Hmm, well, it’s absolutely jam packed full of sugar as well as the fruit juice it declares on the front of the can. Taste-wise, there’s something of a Monster Ripper essence to it which is nice but very sweet. The main flavours come from apple, pineapple and passion fruit, but they’ve also bunged guava, orange, and a whole host of B vitamins in to boot. All-in-all, it tastes good and gives you one hell of a kick.

This tastes like it must be good for you, and by that I mean it tastes bloody awful. The can claims it contains Elderberry, green tea, grape seed, artichoke, pomegranate and cranberry – I can only tell you that the combination is not good. Maybe you do have to be a woman to drink it, perhaps it tastes better then? But, in my opinion, it tastes like someone has filtered compost and canned the residue. I know it has a decent caffeine hit, but couldn’t tell you the exact amount because there’s no information on the can. That means that it doesn’t contain enough to warrant the warning – but the caffeine is hidden amongst the guarana and green tea extracts.

No Fear is generally one of my favourite brands of energy drink, not only for the flavour but also for the originality of a re-sealable can. The two newest additions to the range, Blue Storm and Tropical Storm, do not feature this latter unique selling point unfortunately. Whilst I enjoyed Blue Storm, Tropical Storm was sadly nothing special. It’s a sharp and sweet tropical drink which tastes much the same as any other tropical flavoured energy drink. Still, if you like that sort of thing then you get a lot of drink for your money so far as premium brands go.
