Mountain Dew Supernova

October 19th, 2011

I love Mountain Dew, so it’ll come as no suprise that I like Supernova. This variety is pale pink, as all Mountain Dews need a unique colouring, and tastes of strawberry. It also has melon flavouring but I couldn’t notice that coming through the strawberry. It’s a light and refreshing flavour, perfect for the summer and only available imported from the US as a limited edition so grab it quick!

Source Sugar Free

October 15th, 2011

It tastes no different to the full-fat Source (click here for that review). Obviously because it is sugar free, I preferred it, but taste-wise it was exactly the same.

Source

October 8th, 2011

This Morrisons own-brand drink tastes very similar to Asda/Sainsbury’s own brands, only slightly better. I’m assuming it is due to the use of carrot and stuff (“vegetable” extracts), but the Morrisons drink is smoother and more palatable than Asda/Sainsbury’s. Sadly though it’s still not the best out there and is miles behind Aldi’s own-brand Red Thunder.

Pit Bull Sugar Free

October 5th, 2011

Now, I’ve not tried the full-fat version of Pit Bull at the time of writing this review, and this is my first ever taste of Pit Bull energy drink. I’m told that the sugar-free version tastes exactly the same as the regular version and I hope it does. Pit Bull’s flagship flavour is described as having “a great lemon/lime ginger ale taste”. Now, I can’t really compare it against ginger ale, but the lemon/lime flavour certainly comes through. It’s a refreshing summery drink which went down very nicely on the particularly hot day that I drank it on. Sadly, neither the can nor the web site advises the caffeine content of the product so I’ve made a guess at 10mg/100ml. It didn’t have a great kick, but it had a great flavour.

Red Thunder

October 1st, 2011

Aldi make the best Red Bull clone I’ve ever tasted. Red Thunder is that product and it’s not only pretty cheap, but it’s also the closest drink you’ll get to Red Bull itself. The taste is sweet and very smooth with no bitterness or sourness at all. If there’s an Aldi near you, then you need to try this drink before Red Bull themselves slap Aldi with a law suit for taste copying (if that’s possible??).

Rip It – Power

September 28th, 2011

Very interesting… Rip It Power is my first taste of the Rip It range of energy drinks. I believe that this particular one is the ‘original’ flavour, but I can’t quite put my finger on what that flavour is. The web site doesn’t enlighten me either so we’re going to have to rely on my taste-buds. So, I thought at first there may be raspberry in it, but the colour is a cloudy dark yellow (more on the orange side than Mountain Dew style). I think it’s probably raspberry and a citrus fruit like orange mixed together but it’s certainly a combination that works well. The caffeine content is pretty high so don’t drink too many at once because it does pack a punch. Right, there’s literally loads more flavours of Rip It to try and I’m really hoping that it hasn’t peaked early – I’ve never seen a brand with so many varieties before which includes different flavours of energy shots too and several low calories options.

Explosade Energy Orange

September 24th, 2011

It’s just fizzy orange squash really. A nice drink which is low in caffeine. This is Aldi’s own-brand equivalent of Lucozade Energy Orange and compared to that drink it’s much stronger in flavour. It’s also very good value by comparison too and much better tasting than the more expensive Powerade Energy Orange. Not much of a wake-up factor to it though…

KX Sugar Free

September 21st, 2011

KX Sugar Free is the low calorie version of the newly rebranded KX. In many ways it is identical, but the loss of sugar seems to have mellowed the flavour a little for the better. The harshness of the flavour is lessened making it a sweeter drink overall – quite strange considering it has no sugar. I’d recommend this over the full fat one if you are given the choice.

KX

September 17th, 2011

KX started out life as Tesco Kick many years ago. It rebranded to KX only a couple of years ago and more recently it has undergone a new rebranding – completely snipping the Tesco own-brand image altogether. It’s made by Cott Beverages and now contains guarana. The taste has also changed slightly due to this recent rebrand, but still retains the KX characteristic sourness. It is another Red Bull clone and is quite a nice drink overall, and given the reasonable price in Tesco it is also good value.
