Pink Bolt Zero
July 27th, 2012Do you see what they did there? They took ‘Blue’ and replaced it with ‘Pink’ cuz it’s a pink drink, so funny, the marketing department at Sainsbury’s must’ve been in stitches over that for hours… <end of sarcasm>. As a drink though, it’s rather bland. There’s a nice taste of strawberry and kiwi in there somewhere, but it’s so watered down that you don’t get enough of the flavour coming through. That said, it’s refreshing and light.

Red Alert
July 21st, 2012Not too sweet or watery or sour or bitter… just right! It’s a shame it’s another Red Bull clone because the balance of flavour is ideal. I purchased Red Alert from my local shop, and looking at the can it seems to have been produced for Booker’s cash and carry therefore I am assuming this is their own brand product. Looking at the can however you’d be forgiven if you assumed this was a premium brand and the taste lives up to the assumption. Overall, a great product but still not as good value as either the Euro Shopper, Aldi or Lidl drinks.
Blue Bolt Mango and Passion Fruit
July 14th, 2012Tart, sharp and sweet – it’s like a can of fruit juice more than energy drink. The tropical flavour is very strong and makes you draw back the corners of your mouth like you’ve sucked on a slice of lemon. It’s very sugary and I can’t say it’s one of my favourites – I do prefer a more traditional energy drink flavour if I’m honest!
KX Red Berry
July 7th, 2012It doesn’t taste like a normal energy drink, so for those people who don’t usually like energy drinks, this could be for you. It wasn’t for me though. The berry flavour was extremely strong and not to my liking at all. It was like it had been made using a fruit squash mix to be honest, with a large squash to water ratio. If you like your energy drinks, then choose a normal energy drink instead.

Crunk Grape-Acai
June 23rd, 2012I was taken straight back to my childhood when I took a sip of this one. Many years back, on the way to school, we used to buy zillions of packets of some sour ball sweets (can’t remember the name). We’d have daily competitions of who could fit the most in their mouth before gagging… oh the memories. Anyway, this drink reminds me of the sour grape flavoured sweets we had. Might not be the nicest tasting but the memories filled in the gaps! If you can find a can, try it and maybe you’ll take a trip down memory lane too.

Mountain Dew White Out
June 2nd, 2012Yummy! Another imported can purchased at Americandy. This drink tastes like a very smooth lemonade. There’s no sharpness to it and the balance of carbonation, citrus flavouring, sweetness and sickliness is just right. Not the best Mountain Dew but certainly near the top. It’s also the first Mountain Dew which doesn’t seem to contain a radioactive colouring. This drink is just a cloudy white colour (as the name suggests) which makes it similar in appearance to a traditional lemonade.

Guarana Antarctica
May 26th, 2012“O Original Do Brasil” apparently… and another apparently, it’s the second most popular soft drink in Brazil after Coca-Cola. Finally, stocked by Tesco, it is available in the UK. If you’re expecting a massive energy hit from a guarana extract beverage then you’ll be disappointed. The caffeine estimate is a generous 1mg/100ml – which I suspect is over estimated. Flavour-wise, it’s unique. There’s something slightly fruity about the taste, a bit appley with a hint of pear. Of course, those fruits aren’t actually in the drink, I’m just trying to describe the flavour of guarana itself – try it for yourself because it’s very different to any other soft drink I’ve tried..

Relentless Apple and Kiwi
May 19th, 2012I don’t generally like the taste of apples, either the real fruit or the synthetic flavouring version…. so I tried this drink with a low opinion already formed. It actually surprised me because I now want to get another can of this. The flavour is light and sweet, but not too sweet. It’s fruity and moreish, and packs quite a punch of wake-up-ness – I really enjoyed this new Relentless variety, and it’s definitely original – there’s nothing out there I can compare it too even if I look through my list of USA drinks… This one is unique to the UK for the moment so go buy it and try it and help it stay on sale!
