What is ‘Nootropic’? Apparently it’s ingredients that support cognitive function and reduce fatigue, and inspired by the film ‘Limitless’ (the book’s better, but I still loved the film and the TV series personally!). This is a new brand, and the can design is a bit different too with it being wrapped in a label instead of directly printed. The flavour of the drink sadly doesn’t appear to be anything special. It tastes like a supermarket own-brand blackcurrant drink. It’s low calorie (almost no-calorie) so it does have that in its favour.

This drink was so sour that I didn’t get any cola flavour at all. I might just as well have been sucking on a lemon to be honest. Still, it’s a very fast acting and potent drink which bolted me awake pretty quickly!

Slightly different to the taste I was expecting – the usual energy shot flavour is one that’s very bitter with quite a nasty aftertaste, but this one was instead very sharp with a sweet aftertaste. It still made me draw back my lips from my teeth and make a hissing sound, but it was nowhere near bad enough to make me question my motives in trying the shot this time. It’s pretty high in caffeine even for a shot and gave me a boost in pretty much record time… not a drink to be taken lightly!

I’m not sure where Tesco managed to dig this drink up from, but its web site is no longer active and the social media accounts haven’t posted anything in years. Aside from the spelling of Pantha, which offends my pedantry, the drink is nothing special. It’s a basic sickly tasting clone and full of sugar.

Here it is, No. 22. I think that this replaces the Kaffir Lemon and Lime Sunsoul drink which I reviewed back at the end of 2017 because I haven’t seen that recently. Anyhow, if my memory serves me correctly then I found the old version quite nice and refreshing – a very summery drink despite finding it in Winter. Sadly, this new version is a bit more tart and not as smooth as the old one. It’s still nice, but disappointing when I had such good memories of its predecessor.

Imagine if you can that you have managed to liquidise or juice a whole bunch of sour fizzy cola bottle sweets. And then you downed it in one go. That’s pretty much what you have with this cola flavoured energy shot. It gets full marks for originality because I have never tasted anything like this before! It needs to be sweeter though to be perfect because you still get the expected very bitter and sour taste that you get with every other energy shot. Worth a go if you manage to find one because it’s one of a kind.

No.17 in the Sunsoul collection, which means only No.3 to find according to their web site -which is bizarre at time of review… check it out. All black+white, moody, with three girls dressed in evening wear holding cans of Sunsoul whilst posing in some country house surroundings. It seems at odds with the 100% natural energy vibe. I was expecting fields and forests and things, oh well. Taste-wise it’s really nice – I don’t like pear flavourings at all, but I can’t taste it in this drink. It’s very fruity and perhaps the cocktail of pear with blackberry has made it palatable for me. It’s slightly lower in caffeine than most energy drinks, and is definitely not low calorie, but it’s a good drink all the same.

I had high hopes for this drink after trying the sugar free version. It’s nice tasting, but it’s just a clone. Although I’m not classing this as low calorie because it’s the full fat version in the range, it’s actually not that calorific. At about 91kcals per can, it’s lower in calories than some of the low calorie ones I’ve reviewed in the past. That’s in part to the addition of sweeteners to compensate for a lower sugar content, which is necessary to avoid the UK sugar tax. You can’t tell that’s it’s reduced sugar at all. Flavour-wise it’s mellow and sweet with no bitter aftertaste and pleasant to drink, but it’s nothing special.
I have to hand it to Aldi, their Dark Thunder range is going down well with me. This tropical flavour drink is much closer to orange in my opinion, but that’s no bad thing. It’s slightly on the sickly side after a large can has been downed, but it’s still tasty and refreshing over all.
